Wasps (acrylics and marker on cardboard)

I need a jump start for the new year. So I’m continuing my experiments with color, today on pieces of cardboard. The acrylics and ink markers really popped against the white. The cardboard really didn’t work well with pencils or crayons. I’m trying to avoid Photoshop as much as possible for coloring. Two reasons: The mouse key right and left click hurt my hands too much, and it’s just not the same as the messy brush against paper feeling. Oh, I painted another wasp in the Arctic Room. I hope it doesn’t scare me when I go back down there!

The 2 below are both photoshopped, tweaking the hue and saturation of the image. That’s always fun to play around with! Usually it changes the entire mood of the image in strange and bizzare ways.

B’s Mom sent me her old art kit, a clunky chest full of goodies! I found wonderful brushes and two tubes of acrylic paints: A deep red and a thick yellow! (Yellow is quickly becoming my favorite color. In crayons, definitely, and acrylic paint, but I don’t really care for it as much with a pencil or marker.)

I like that you are continuing to use color! However, your obsession with stinging insects is curious, and these pictures in particular are very disturbing to me – the faces, yikes! The third one down is pretty, but again, in a creepy way. Was it Jason or Todd who started you on this? What IS it with you guys? On another note, I do appreciate you linking to your updates on FB – it reminds me to check in on your blog! -alison

I’m so happy that you visit my blog, ALison! Thank you! Yes, I have to agree, my obsession with stinging insects is curious, even to me. Yes, Jason and Todd probably had something to do with it. I’ve been haunted by these grotesque little faces since I was a kid, (one of my early phobias, maybe), and I started drawing them sometime in 2011, I think. For some weird reason, now that I’m experimenting with color, it’s these insect creatures that jump out onto the paper. I rarely ever drew anything like this until I started practicing color. Wasps and birds.
Anyway, I’ve developed a wary but respectful relationship with little flying things that can sting. They don’t scare me as much anymore.
(Todd and Jason sent me a photo of an Asian Wasp, apparently seen in this country, and boy did that freak me out! THAT was when I really started drawing these wasps!)

I’m really glad you like my blog, ALison! Thank you for sharing it with your friends.

Let’s see some birds! NOT predators, LOL!

I should warn you, Alison: Some of my birds are quite sinister-looking!
